Item 1

The Press, February 16th. "A milestone in New Zealand's political history is being marked in the small West Coast town of Blackball with a memorial to the 108 miners' strike... The monument's design incorporates a central wooden post, chains and rigging and metal "flags" to represent the banners carried by strikers. Auckland sculptor, Phill Rooke, said he hoped it would give a sense of the tough industrial setting of the times, as well as the drive and determination of the strikers."  Giles Brown

Item 2
Greymouth Evening Star, February 17th. "A sculpture which incorporates different elements of the labour movement has been finished in Blackball, commemorating the coal mining township's place in the history of unions and working class struggle... Two shipping containers converted into rooms behind the Blackball sculpture will house exhibitions and photos of events surrounding the strike era." Matt Kersten
